Sibling Gifts
A sibling gift will show big brother or big sister that they aren't forgotten
While it’s perfectly fine to be excited about the new baby, it’s important not to forget about the child or children that came before this latest addition. The older sibling(s) may be curious about the pregnancy, childbirth and the baby itself. A young child might welcome the chance to be a “big” brother or sister. On the other hand, children might resent the disruption the newborn will cause to their current situation.
As much as a new baby can change the lives of its parents, imagine the impact the new arrival will have on its older sibling or siblings. There will be a lot of attention being showered on the Mom-to-be and the new baby. A child who has been accustomed to being the only one might not appreciate having to suddenly share the attention. Even children who already have a few siblings might not be quick to welcome a new member to their exclusive club.
The parents will have their hands full with the demands that a newborn baby can bring. There are things that friends and family of the expectant parents can do to help the older sibling view the baby as a welcome addition instead of an unwelcome intrusion. There are several books that address the situation in a story form that a young child can understand. You could give one of these books to the expectant parents to read to the big brother or sister-to-be.
When you visit the family, make an effort to talk and play with the older child or children. When you meet the baby for the first time, with baby gift in hand, it would be a thoughtful gesture to also bring a gift for the older sibling(s). There are T-shirts and badges that proclaim the older child’s status as the big brother or big sister. You could give toys, games, books or DVD’s that are age appropriate for older children, which could later be enjoyed by the baby when he or she gets older.
A little extra attention paid to existing family members can go a long way toward making the new baby’s arrival the joyous occasion it deserves to be.
