Baby
Shower Decorations
The baby shower decorations you select will be based
on several factors. The first place to start is
with the shower theme. The most common baby shower
decorations include streamers, balloons and
centerpieces, often colored pink or blue depending
on the baby’s gender. The theme could also be
carried onto the serving ware if disposable paper or
plastic plates, cups and cutlery are used. If you
are planning a shower that is a little less
traditional, you should still have no problems
finding decorations to match your theme.
You will need to consider the
shower location when planning a decorating scheme.
If it is being held at a place you are not very
familiar with, you should try to scope it out at
least once to see what types of items will and will
not work in the space. If you are hosting the party
at a restaurant, hotel or other public location,
there might be restrictions about taping things to
the wall or ceiling. Be sure to check with the
property owner or manager on duty, as you may be
held responsible for damage caused to the space. If
you are hosting the party at someone else’s home,
you should ask how they feel about tape on their
doors or pin pricks in their walls, and plan your
decorations accordingly.
You need to also consider how
long you have to prepare the party site. If you
will only be able to access the venue an hour or so
before the party, you might not be able to decorate
as elaborately as if you were hosting it in a
private home and had several hours to decorate. Of
course, if you are holding the shower at a place
that is accustomed to hosting parties and other
events, you might not need as many decorations. For
example, tables at a restaurant might already be
decorated with flowers or candles.
Even if you are having the
shower at your own house, and have several days to
decorate, some decorations have a short shelf life.
Balloons, whether blown up with helium or air from
your own lungs, will only stay fully inflated for a
limited time. Flowers look freshest on the day they
are picked up from the store. If the party will be
held in the evening, you might have time to get
fresh flowers and blow up balloons. If the party
will be held late morning or early afternoon, you
might want to use some other decorations.
One way to save time, money and
clean up time when the shower is over is to use
double-duty decorations. A beautifully decorated
diaper cake makes an impressive decoration for a
gift table, and can also be given to the Mom-to-be
as one of her shower gifts. If you want to make a
personalized sign for the shower, you could draw it
on a chalkboard or a large pad of paper placed on a
child-sized easel. This could then be given to the
mother for when the baby gets a little older, or it
could be enjoyed by the baby’s older sibling(s)
right away. Baby blocks or stuffed animals serve
double duty as table centerpieces and baby gifts for
the new arrival. Pretty pens decorated like flowers
could be placed in small pots or vases on each table
as a centerpiece. The pens can be used to play baby
shower games, and then taken home by each guest as a
shower favor.
The decorations will be the
first thing the guests notice when they arrive at
the baby shower. They set the mood for the party
and can make the theme come alive. The decorations
will be preserved in photos of the event for years
to come, so you want to make them special. Follow
our tips and you will create a lovely decorating
scheme sure to delight the Mom-to-be and all the
guests.
