Baby Shower Tea Party
A baby shower tea party is a popular type of baby shower
One baby shower idea that is gaining in popularity is the baby shower tea party. This follows the increased popularity of drinking tea and visiting tearooms for lunch or afternoon tea. If you are interested in a baby shower tea party, you could hold it at a tearoom or a hotel or restaurant that offers an afternoon tea. If you are more of a DIY type of person, you could host the party at a private home or other space, such as a church social hall, and prepare the food and beverage yourself.
Tearooms are usually very attractive spaces that would provide a very classy environment for a baby shower. Most tearooms can put together a package for a baby shower tea party that will include food and beverages. Hosting the baby shower at a tearoom would offer obvious advantages. There would be minimal prep work, as the tearoom staff would set up and serve the guests. And of course there would be no clean up. The biggest disadvantage would probably be the cost, which depending on the venue and your location could be substantial. You could possibly reduce the cost by serving only a dessert tea, as opposed to serving tea sandwiches and all the other traditional tea accompaniments. This would work if the baby shower tea party were scheduled for mid-afternoon, after lunch but before dinner.
If you are on a budget, a baby shower tea party can be hosted inexpensively in nearly any venue. As long as you don’t go overboard with specialty teas, tea can be an inexpensive beverage. Attendees at a tea party won’t be expecting a full meal, so food costs can be kept down. This makes a baby shower tea party a great idea if you are you are planning a large party with lots of attendees. It is also ideal if you are planning a “drop-in” style shower, where people come and go as their schedules permit. The mommy-to-be can open gifts as her guests sip and nibble at their leisure.
The simplest way to serve the tea would be to provide a carafe of hot water and tea bags in an assortment of flavors and varieties. Make sure also to provide plenty of sugar (either in packets or cubes) and artificial sweetener, lemon slices and milk. You should also provide a pot of coffee for those who prefer that to tea.
A quick note about tea and pregnancy – The jury is still out on the safety of drinking tea for expectant mothers. Most pregnant women avoid or at least limit caffeine consumption, and many teas contain at least some caffeine. Also, there is some evidence that the herbs in certain herbal teas could be harmful to pregnant women and their unborn babies. The decision of whether to drink tea during pregnancy is something to be decided by the expectant mother after consulting with her doctor. However, you can avoid any worries by having a variety of other beverages on hand at the baby shower tea party, such as lemonade, juice, ice water and milk. These beverages can be enjoyed by the new mother, as well as by other guests who prefer an alternative to tea.
The food for a baby shower tea party can be prepared in advance. You could either prepare the food yourself, or purchase trays a grocery store, restaurant or bakery. A traditional tea includes a variety of finger sandwiches, such as cucumber, chicken salad and egg salad. For a touch of whimsy, you could cut the sandwiches with cookie cutters shaped like bunnies, bears or duckies. There should also be an assortment of bite-sized pastries. Scones and jam tarts are traditional choices, though unless you have members of British royalty on the guest list, you can select whatever pastries you think guests would enjoy. You may also wish to serve strawberries and cream, another dish commonly served at teatime.
If you have a collection of fine china, a baby shower tea party would provide the perfect excuse to put it to good use. Otherwise, disposable cups and plates will be perfectly acceptable. Make sure to have plenty of spoons on hand for guests to stir their tea.
There are many favors that would be adorable for a baby shower tea party. You can select from personalized tea bag favors, tea infusers, tea bag caddies or kitchen timers shaped like teapots.
A baby shower tea party can be an elegant and fun affair for the expectant mother and her guests. Whether you decide to hold it at a formal tearoom, or in another venue of your choosing, the guests will be sure to have a grand time.
