Baby Shower Invitations

The first question you may be asking is, do I even need to send invitations?  Can’t I just call or tell people in person?  How about e-mail?  These modern methods of communication might be fine when you’re in the preliminary planning stages for the baby shower to check the schedules of key attendees.  However, once the date, time, location and other details are firmed up, it is generally best to mail invitations to all prospective guests.

The shower invitation serves several purposes.  An invitation conveys to the invitee the importance of the event in a way that a phone call or e-mail cannot.  The invitation also sets the mood for the shower.  There are invitations to fit nearly any shower theme.  The invitation provides all of the vital information, such as date, time and location, details which can easily get lost in casual conversation.  The attendee is likely to keep the invitation in a prominent place where she won’t lose it.  This cuts down on the number of last minute phone calls you might receive from people who can’t remember exactly when or where they are supposed to arrive.

The type of invitation you select depends on how much time you have to plan the event and your budget.  There are high quality pre-printed invitations that will set an elegant mood for the event.  Getting the invitations printed may save time for the party hostess, as it can take a lot of time to write the needed information on each invitation.  It can take a few weeks to have custom invitations delivered, and these invitations cost more than more generic invitations, but the sophistication they will lend to the affair may well be worth it.

Invitations with blanks to be filled in with the vital details are less expensive than custom printed ones.  They can be picked up at a stationery, card or party store, making them a good option for showers that are being put together on short notice.

Another option is to get invitations that can be printed on the computer.  This will save the trouble of handwriting, which can be especially nice if penmanship is not your best skill.  These are a good compromise if you want something more elegant than a handwritten card, but don’t have the time or budget to have custom invitations printed.

It is best to ask the invitees to RSVP so you can get an accurate headcount to plan for party essentials such as seating, food, beverages and shower favors.  It is acceptable to have guests RSVP by phone or e-mail, so be certain to include this contact information on the invitation. Also make sure to enclose a map and directions to the party location.

If the baby shower has a theme, it is okay to inform guests of the theme, so that they may select a gift that corresponds if they choose.  It is not acceptable to dictate an exact gift for each guest to bring.  If the parents have set up a baby registry at a store, it is not a good idea to include this information on the invitation.  If anyone wants this information, they can inquire when they RSVP.

The baby shower invitation will get the guests into the party spirit.  Pick something that suits the theme and personality of the shower, and you will be well on your way to planning an event to remember.
